attending Secondary School

Pupils who have recently arrived in the country are directed to different classes taking into consideration the level of studies they have reached in their country of origin, and their knowledge of French and German.

Secondary education

ALLET Classes
For pupils with a good level of French and mathematics but weak knowledge of German there are reinforced German classes ALLET. These classes offer pupils two German lessons as reinforcement in addition to normal classes.

The International Baccalaureate is offered in Luxembourg in four schools (Lycée Technique du Centre, Athénée de Luxembourg, Ecole Waldorf/Fräi-Öffentlech Waldorfschoul and International School of Luxembourg).  This qualification is studied in French or English, and awarded with a diploma recognised by Luxembourg law as equivalent to the secondary education diploma. It is aimed at young people aged 15 years and over, recently arrived in the country and able to undertake high-level secondary studies.

Technical secondary education

Insertion classes are aimed at pupils who arrive in the country and do not speak either German or French. They take an intensive French course and initiation classes in Luxemburgish. Such pupils are then integrated into insertion classes in the lower cycle, specific linguistic regime classes in the medium cycle or EST classes.

Insertion classes  for the lower cycle (7th-8th-9th) aimed at pupils with a very good educational level but who speak little or no German or French. Admission is after passing a test and pupils follow an intensive course of French (STF) or German (STA).

The insertion class for young adults (CLIJA) is an insertion class for young people aged 16 to 17 years. Pupils take a basic French course which allows them to access secondary education.

The pre-professional insertion class (CLIPP) is a transitional class for pupils who have some knowledge of French. Afterwards, the pupil moves into school insertion or workplace insertion.

Specific linguistic regime classes (RLS) In the medium and upper cycle (from 10th classes, there are RLS classes (specific linguistic regime)) for pupils who do not have sufficient knowledge of German.
